Last weekend, Matlack Florist celebrated our Annual Holiday Open House. Not only was it a great opportunity to take advantage of some spectacular sales, it was also a great day for some yummy BREAD.
An Open House tradition at Matlack Florist is our delicious assortment of home-made breads. Each year, customers ask for the recipes, and we are happy to oblige! We'll start with the 2 favorites of the day. Keep checking for more!

LEMON BREAD (a favorite of yours truly)
Makes 2 loaves
Cream: 1 C Butter, softened and 2 C sugar. Beat Well.
Add: 4 large eggs. Beat Well
Combine: 3 C flour, 1/2 t salt, 1 t baking soda, 1 t baking powder.
Add: 1 C milk, 1/2 C sour cream
Add: zest of 2 lemons, 2t lemon extract
Glaze: lemon juice, 10X sugar.
Optional: 2T poppy seed

Bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes.

ZUCCHINI WALNUT BREAD
Makes 2 loaves
1 C Crisco Oil
2 C sugar
2 eggs
2 C grated zucchini
Add: 3C flour
3 t cinnamon
1 t baking soda
1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1 C chopped walnuts

Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour, 10 minutes.

There is a catch, however -- you need to promise to keep only one flower for yourself and give the others away to 11 different people...meet someone new & spread goodwill while contributing to the community in which we love and work.

FTD Good Neighbor Day originated in 1994 by a fellow FTD Florist, and continues to be a day of celebration of friendship and goodwill for everyone!

To celebrate the first day of Spring, we held a Daffodil Special, with the profits going to The Chester County Food Bank. A huge Thank You goes out to all who came in to purchase their Daffodil bunches for this great cause. It's Groundhog Day, All Over Again.

Tomorrow is not just any Groundhog Day, but the 125th Anniversary of the first! I am sure all of us (Ok, let's be fair, most of us. There are skiers out there!) are anxious for Punxsutawney Phil to tell us that Spring is not too far behind.

If the anticipation of Phil's prediction of an early Spring just isn't enough to lift your spirits out of this cold, icy, snowy winter....try Daffodils! Each winter, the moment Daffodils arrive in the shop, I am instantly uplifted. To me, nothing reminds me that Spring is just around the corner like a vibrant bunch of Daffodils!

Mariposa is a particular favorite of mine, especially with the Autumn holidays coming up. It is hard to pick a favorite - I am torn between the pumpkin and turkey serving platters, as well as the fall-themed napkin holders.

The best thing about Mariposa is the fact it is made by artisans using 100% recycled aluminum, and every step of the process is ecologically sound!

The Name Game has now created an air of mystery at Matlack Florist. For the past several weeks, each Friday morning upon opening, we find a calling card. Someone has stopped by for a rose, only to find we were closed. The first week, Alice Cooper stopped by. The next Friday we missed Bruce Springstein. Then Chelsea Clinton, David Bowie, Elijah Woods, Frank Sinatra, and John Glenn. Checking the door on Friday morning has now become an event for the sales team. It is such a great feeling that something fun we have created for our customers is giving us laughs in return. This weeks names are Henry & Heather. Wonder who will stop by...

What's in a Name?

For the past 26 weeks, we have focused on one aspect of our customers' lives to increase walk-in business -- their names. The concept was simple. If your name appears on our outside ad board, come in for a free rose. We started with the A's, and featured two names for the week. While the "Name Game" worked by bringing in customers, we also received some unexpected results. Knowlege of our name board became wide-spread. It allowed our customers to become more involved with Matlack Florist, and us with them. Stories began to emerge, and we realized something truly special came from this simple promotion.
Phone calls began to come in with customers asking the name of the week, giving their opinions for the next week's names, even wondering what we were going to do with the letter Q. We gave away only two roses that week - one to Quentin & one to Qwanda - but imagine the fanfare in the store when "We have a Quentin!" is shouted from the front counter, and everyone stops work to come and greet Quentin. He knew of the sign before driving by that week, and was sure his name would be represented.
Our sign became something to look for. A pre-schooler name Ian knew of the sign becasue his mother often drove by our store. He was waiting and waiting to see what name would be picked for the letter I. When he came into the store with his mom, she told us of his excitement of his name being selected. He picked out a rose, and very sweetly gave it to her.
We've also had plenty of requests, as the sign has become a topic of conversation among our customers. Our regular post woman requested her name, Tammy for the letter T. We received a phonecall that a girl named Vicky travelled by our store every Wednesday on her way to physical therapy, and she would be thrilled to see her name selected. While we haven't been able to cater to all requests, our customers shouldn't worry. Perhaps there will be a round two. With the Y's this week (only 3 days left, Yvette & Yves!), and the Z's the next, we have nowhere left to go but right back to the A's!
